Panel discussion at the 2011 Annual Conference

FightSMA will be welcoming elite researchers and scientific professionals from the SMA community to the Hotel Monaco April 15-17, 2012, in Washington, D.C., for the FightSMA Annual Research Conference. The non-profit group, which was founded in 1991, has recently established its new national headquarters in Alexandria, VA. To date, FightSMA has raised more than $7 million for SMA research and boasts 18 chapters in the U.S. and Canada.

The FightSMA Annual Research Conference showcases exciting discoveries in the world of SMA science. FightSMA Scientific Director Dr. Christian Lorson will lead SMA scientists in their focus on a variety of therapeutic interventions, including novel small molecules, oligonucleotides, and gene therapy. Each year, attendees remark about the exciting and open atmosphere that has become a hallmark of the FightSMA meetings—as expressed by Dr. Charlotte Sumner, Assistant Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine: “FightSMA’s support makes all of our work possible, and I always find this meeting so inspiring and enjoyable. There are so many different, exciting things going on in SMA research, and every year, I see a substantial step forward.”
